When my husband and I started fostering, we did not have a clear plan. We just knew we wanted to support families in our community. Adoption was not our main goal we simply wanted to help. At first, we fostered younger kids. But everything changed when we met the teenager who became our son. I never expected to adopt a teenager at 26, but now I cannot picture my life without him.

After adopting, we decided to open our home to LGBTQ+ teens and those at risk of being sexually exploited. People in these groups are often ignored and not well understood in the foster care system.

Some people shy away when they hear this, and I understand it is not an easy topic. But ignoring it does not help. These teens deserve love, safety, and a place where they can be accepted as they are.

Fostering teens is powerful. You meet them at a time when their choices really shape their future. I have had teens who came straight from juvenile detention, and within months, they were touring colleges and landing their first jobs. Many of them have never felt true, unconditional love. When they finally do, they begin to grow and believe in themselves.

You do not need to be a perfect parent. You just need to show up and give your time. One quote I live by is, “Kids spell love T-I-M-E.” it is so true. Sometimes, I make mistakes, and my kids do the same.

But we always come back together and keep going.

Some people are surprised that I parent teens who are only a few years younger than me. My adopted son and I are just 13 years apart. But to him, i am just Mom. That is all that matters.

Over time, i have learned that behind every behavior, there is a deeper need. I have grown a lot thanks to therapy, support groups, mindfulness, and a strong community.

We have fostered 17 kids so far and plan to continue. Our family is not just who lives in our house it is made up of all the kids and families we have met along the way. Watching healing happen is the most rewarding part of this journey.

Fostering is not easy, but it is worth every moment.
